I don't think there's anything secret.
You're going to learn to be comfortable with every inch of it before you apply for an Airworthiness Certificate!

The Glastar is well designed plane.   The biggest risks will be the things you add yourself--the engine.

Don't worry (now)!   You'll be fretting about things no one else will notice forever!

Considering purchasing a partially completed kit.  Specifically a Glastar.  Any suggestions on how I could go about having it properly inspected, potential pitfalls and other considerations would be appreciated.

The following are some notes from the May 14th talk on engines.
Please help with any corrections or clarifications.

Put a fine screen on a Continental oil filter pickup. (Lycoming already uses fine screen).
Flush or replace oil coolers when overhauling an engine.
Carbon tracks can cause detonation.

Hollow carburetor floats can fill with fuel (can experience pressure that causes
Use solid epoxy floats on carbs.
Service Bulletin said all Blue Floats by 12/31/2008

Lycoming mystery failure. Could be new cylinder hold down bolts.
Continental requires replacement on overhaul.  Lycoming doesn't.
Dave says “torque once (use it once) than throw it away” (regarding these bolts).

Tuning the EMS for best power comes out to a little rich.

Embry Riddle runs their planes at full rich.  EMS saved them 19% and also gives 7 or 8 more hp.

Compression ratio doesn't give you that much more horse power.  Beware of performance claims.

Balance for the rpm that you run at.  Balancing for 8000 rpm is useless.

Porting, polishing, doesn't last long.  Because of build up of exhaust is different between cylinders.

Cyl. Temp:  keep below 400 deg.

Don't run “Lean of Peak!”   Run a little rich to cool the engine better.

G&N says to use straight weight, but if you want a multi-grade then use
Phillips 20-50, because it is ALL oil and will build up a varnish that will protect the engine better.

Lycoming price increases happen every October.  G&N can order ahead to avoid that increase.

Running it up to Temperature.   210 in the sump for half hour to get the moisture out of the oil.

Auto fuels will bubble and cause leaning the 106 def. F.

Hand turning an engine will wipe the oil off the parts and the oil pump won't turn fast enough to put new oil back on the parts.

!!! consider how to  pressurize the oil on the engine before starting it !!!

Congrats Sabrina!

MIT is wonderful!  I like their Open Course Ware but it would be some much better to be there in person.

Let us know if she will be at Illinois conference!

Thanks for offering the use of the scales!

Sabrina was admitted to MIT today.

Her airplane appeared on the cover May 2d's Chicago Tribune.

She has been invited to appear at the 2010 Illinois Aviation Conference.
update: http://sabrinaaerospace.com/index.php?news&nid=26

Her three Siltec scales will be made available to EAA153 once she finishes her modifications to N5886Q and weighs that aircraft first...

With the airframe complete and engine mounted, I am working on wiring and engine ancilliaries.  The panel is mostly complete, and the EFIS (GRT Sport HS 8.4) lit up for the first time 3/21/10  Smiley
Half of the intake manifold is built.  The muffler that has to withstand 1700 degree F with super-sonic shock waves is under construction from sched 40 stainless steel piping.
Both water and oil cooling radiators have been roughed out, but now need to be mounted and plumbed.  Engine needs a complete going over to assure all accessory parts are secure and properly torqued.  Have to figure out a mounting location for 2 50 amp alternators, after buying remanufactured units with the right multi-vee pulleys.
Last to be fabricated will be the ductwork for both radiators plus a ram-air inlet for the intake.

From a year ago, prices have really come down.
DPA is about $4.30
LITH   3CK is still the lowest at about $3.85
JVL is close at about $3.90
I usually check www.airnav.com  or we have a link on our link page.

Roger and I flew our old Cessnas to Janesville last week. Great restaurant...
We soon will be going to Lansing and Lake Lawn for their fine airport restaurants, if anyone wants to go also.
We should be starting the flyout camping season soon also. Brodhead, Savanah and Compton are the close ones on my list.
I really want to get down to the fly-in and camp KY State Park called Rough River Dam.

Once again, nice job Jonny with the updating and putting in the Aviation links.
I especially like being able to watch the old SkyKing TV show and look at the Aircraft Museum, full of strange airplanes.
